Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to get in the proper Halloween spirit when it's 90 degrees outside. I have yet to put together a costume or stock up on Reese's cups. Bella, on the other hand, has been talking up Pa's Pumpkin Patch since July. Besides the customary pumpkin photo ops, she loves the miniature train and pony rides. Bring cash. Lots of cash. For a slightly more authentic pumpkin patch experience, visit Tanaka Farms, about half an hour away in Orange County. Kids can explore a corn maze, ride a wagon around the farm, or pick vegetables.

On Sunday afternoon, we have a tough choice: chihuahuas in tiaras or the Fall Harvest Festival at Rancho Los Alamitos? At the Howl'oween parade, watch hundreds of dressed-up dogs strut their stuff on 2^nd Street. Children can compete in a kids' costume contest at Livingston Park. This year's Fall Harvest Festival features games from around the world. Other activities include storytelling, crafts, and live music. Admission is free. Park at CSULB Lot 11 Sections B and C, then take a shuttle bus to the Rancho. Also on Sunday afternoon, the Museum of Latin American Art is hosting a free art workshop in which kids will make Pan de Muerto for Day of the Dead.
