Weekend Roundup: January 17-18

January 16, 2009

T.G.I.T. Okay, so it's not quite the weekend yet, but if you're looking for something fun to do, there are plenty of options:

Celebrate Sandra Boynton. Even if you've never heard the name Sandra Boynton, you've probably seen her cartoon animals on greeting cards and mugs. She's also the author of several classic board books for very young kids, including From A to Z and Barnyard Dance. At 10:00 Saturday morning, Borders bookstore is hosting a family playdate, with interactive activities based on Sandra Boynton's books.

Party for the president. Tuesday, January 20th is Inauguration Day. Regardless of your politics, I think we can all agree that it will be fun to have kids in the White House again, for the first time since Amy Carter in the 70's. Celebrate on Saturday afternoon at 2:00, at Border's special inauguration party for kids.

See a show. I was a little nervous before we took my daughter to her first play at a community theater a few months ago, but she talked about it for weeks afterward. Theater is all about dress-up and pretend, so it's a natural fit for preschoolers. The Orange County Children's Theater will be performing the Wizard of Oz on Saturday at 7:30 P.M. in Anaheim.

Go on a musical vacation. If you'd rather be in Hawaii right now, travel to the islands in song at the Southern California Slack Key Festival in Redondo Beach. The concert is on Sunday, from 2:00 to 5:30 P.M., and features traditional Hawaiian music and dancing. You can also purchase Hawaiian food and crafts, beginning at 11:00 A.M.
