The holiday season is coming to an end, but there are still plenty of fun things to do with the kids this weekend: Feliz Ano Nuevo! On Sunday afternoon at the Museum of Latin American Art , kids can make collages to represent their goals for the new year. The event takes place from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. Admission is free. The Aquarium of the Pacific will be open late this  Read more...

Crafts for a Rainy Christmas Eve

December 24, 2008

Preschool is out, and the weather forecast says it's going to rain in Long Beach today. If you're looking for ways to keep your child's hands busy while you wrap gifts or whip up the Christmas feast, check out these holiday crafts from Savvy Source and around the web: Kids can make Christmas tree cones with ice cream cones and icing (or cream cheese.) Decorate the cones with  Read more...

Weekend Roundup: December 13th - 14th

December 11, 2008

Boy, is there a lot going on this weekend in Long Beach . Just thinking about all of it makes me want to crawl into bed for a long winter's nap. The Long Beach Symphony Orchestra will be performing two family-friendly concerts this weekend, at 6:30 December 13 th , and at 2:00 P.M. December 14 th . The performances will feature traditional Christmas carols, dancers and characters  Read more...

Handmade Christmas Ornaments

December 08, 2008

On Friday we brought home a Christmas tree and trimmed it. I like looking at the gorgeous theme trees in magazines, but for us it's always a messy family Christmas tree, decorated with a haphazard assortment of ornaments we've collected over the years. Among them are a crocheted angel given to me by a family friend years ago, the vintage elf we picked up at the Rose Bowl flea market, and a  Read more...

Holiday Crafts Kids Can Do By Themselves

December 04, 2008

A while back we got a little book of crafts for kids, and I was disappointed to see that the instructions for all the projects began with "Get a parent to. . ." Sure, the crafts look more Martha if parents do all the work themselves, but doesn't that defeat the purpose? Here are a few inexpensive, easy holiday crafts that preschoolers can create with minimal help. Kids are always  Read more...

Free Days at Southern California Museums

November 24, 2008

It seems like just about everyone is pinching pennies these days. Maybe you are adjusting to life on one income, or your family has been hit hard by the recession. But even if you're broke, there are still plenty of fun things to do in Southern California . We have access to well-stocked libraries, beautiful beaches and parks. We are also within an hour' s drive of many museums, and most of  Read more...

The Weekend Roundup: November 22 - 23

November 21, 2008

Wondering what to do this weekend? Here is a sampling of activities for children in and around Long Beach: Go fishing. El Dorado Park is hosting a fishing derby on Saturday, November 2 from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. The park will lend fishing equipment to kids, free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking is $7.00. Make rain . The Aquarium of the  Read more...

The Bowers Kidseum

November 20, 2008

Tuesday, in my ongoing quest to (1) get us out of the house but (2) avoid the smoke-filled air outside, we drove down to the Bowers Kidseum on Main Street in Santa Ana. It took us about half an hour to get there from Long Beach, although there was one harrowing bit when I had to cross three lanes of traffic in two seconds.   The Kidseum is near the Bowers Museum, but it's a separate  Read more...

What I Learned at the Co-Op

November 06, 2008

My daughter's first preschool was a co-op. We've since moved on to a traditional preschool, but I have fond memories of the co-op, and I learned a lot during our time there. The teachers always came up with creative activities, and we often ended up doing them again at home. Here are a few of my favorites: Put bird seed in a big container in your backyard. At preschool we used a sand  Read more...

Long Beach Halloween Happenings

October 23, 2008

Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to get in the proper Halloween spirit when it's 90 degrees outside. I have yet to put together a costume or stock up on Reese's cups. Bella, on the other hand, has been talking up Pa's Pumpkin Patch since July. Besides the customary pumpkin photo ops, she loves the miniature train and pony rides. Bring cash. Lots of cash. For a slightly more authentic  Read more...

Budding Art Critic

October 22, 2008

I've taken my daughter to LACMA and the Geffen in L.A. , but one of our favorite Southern California museums is the Museum of Latin American Art , right here in Long Beach . I like that it's small in scale, the perfect size for a preschooler with a short attention span. Kids are drawn to the rounded, childlike figures in the Botero paintings, as well as the vibrant colors in the  Read more...

Top 5 Things to Do in Long Beach on a Rainy Day

October 16, 2008

We live for weekends at the park, but when we wake up Sunday morning to the patter of rain on the roof, we head to the all-ages story time at Portfolio Coffeehouse near Retro Row on 4th and Junipero. Children sit on pillows on the stage and listen to the stories, then create a simple craft. Meanwhile, you can relax on the comfy couches nearby and enjoy a cup of coffee. Another great  Read more...

The Littlest Picasso

October 14, 2008

Creating art with a preschooler is one of those things I love in theory, but not so much in practice. Setting up all the tiny cups of paint, then wiping smears off the wall afterward seems like a lot of trouble for an activity that will last half an hour. For preschool art minus the mess, check out Look What I Made! Look What I Made! is a cozy art studio on Pacific Coast  Read more...
