Holiday Leftovers: My 5 Favorite Posts from 2008

December 30, 2008

Can you believe 2008 is almost over? As the year winds down, I'm looking back on all the posts I've written for Being Savvy Long Beach and choosing a few of my faves: In Long Beach , A is for Aquarium , M is for MOLAA , and W is for West Coast Choppers . The LBC ABC is a uniquely Long Beach alphabet. It's good place to start if you're visiting for the weekend, or you're new in  Read more...

Go for a Spin

December 29, 2008

Was there a new set of wheels under the tree this year? Riding a tricycle, bike, or scooter can help preschoolers develop large motor skills and get a little exercise at the same time.  My daughter couldn't wait to try out the new big-girl bike Santa brought, so Friday we put it in the trunk and headed off to ride the trails.   Here are some paths around Long Beach where kids can take  Read more...

Thanksgiving Helpers, and Where to Burn Off Those Calories

November 27, 2008

I like to fly solo when I'm cooking Thanksgiving dinner, but my daughter always wants to "help" in the kitchen. This year, I'm planning to give her the same task my mother assigned me when I was a kid: stuffing celery with cream cheese. I will soften the cream cheese, mix in a little worstershire sauce, and cut the celery ahead of time. Then I'll give her a (dull) knife and let her go to town.  Read more...

Long Beach Halloween Happenings

October 23, 2008

Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to get in the proper Halloween spirit when it's 90 degrees outside. I have yet to put together a costume or stock up on Reese's cups. Bella, on the other hand, has been talking up Pa's Pumpkin Patch since July. Besides the customary pumpkin photo ops, she loves the miniature train and pony rides. Bring cash. Lots of cash. For a slightly more authentic  Read more...

Room to Run

October 17, 2008

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time playing outside in the woods. We gathered sticks and poked at anthills, dug for fossils and climbed trees. Our mouths were stained with blackberry juice, and we broke out in rashes from poison ivy. I sometimes wish my daughter had the same freedom to roam and explore, minus the poison ivy of course. When I want to give Bella a little taste of  Read more...

Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!

October 07, 2008

Okay, there aren' t really any lions, tigers, or bears in Long Beach, but there are plenty of other critters to see, and not just squirrels and pigeons. One of my favorite spots to see the local wildlife in Long Beach is the Colorado Lagoon . The Lagoon is a hangout for pelicans, egrets, and even the occasional great blue heron, not to mention garden-variety ducks and geese. In the summer from  Read more...
