Free Days at Southern California Museums
November 24, 2008
It seems like just about everyone is pinching pennies these days. Maybe you are adjusting to life on one income, or your family has been hit hard by the recession. But even if you're broke, there are still plenty of fun things to do in Southern California . We have access to well-stocked libraries, beautiful beaches and parks. We are also within an hour' s drive of many museums, and most of Read more...
Long Beach Halloween Happenings
October 23, 2008
Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to get in the proper Halloween spirit when it's 90 degrees outside. I have yet to put together a costume or stock up on Reese's cups. Bella, on the other hand, has been talking up Pa's Pumpkin Patch since July. Besides the customary pumpkin photo ops, she loves the miniature train and pony rides. Bring cash. Lots of cash. For a slightly more authentic Read more...
10 Things to Do in Long Beach Before Your Child Grows Up
October 20, 2008
When I was a new mother, the days seemed to stretch into infinity. But as I think about kindergarten next year, I have been feeling a little wistful about the end of this part of our lives. Here are some pleasures to savor with your kids before they grow up: Pet a shark at the Aquarium of the Pacific touch tank. Walk along 2 nd Street in Belmont Shore , then sit and eat at an Read more...
Room to Run
October 17, 2008
When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time playing outside in the woods. We gathered sticks and poked at anthills, dug for fossils and climbed trees. Our mouths were stained with blackberry juice, and we broke out in rashes from poison ivy. I sometimes wish my daughter had the same freedom to roam and explore, minus the poison ivy of course. When I want to give Bella a little taste of Read more...
Top 5 Things to Do in Long Beach on a Rainy Day
October 16, 2008
We live for weekends at the park, but when we wake up Sunday morning to the patter of rain on the roof, we head to the all-ages story time at Portfolio Coffeehouse near Retro Row on 4th and Junipero. Children sit on pillows on the stage and listen to the stories, then create a simple craft. Meanwhile, you can relax on the comfy couches nearby and enjoy a cup of coffee. Another great Read more...
Four Great Day Trips
October 13, 2008
I don't know about you, but sometimes I find it hard to get motivated to venture out of our little corner of Southern California. Sit in traffic with a cranky kid? No thanks. But I promise, the places in this post are actually worth the hassle. Just don't forget to bring snacks and a Magnadoodle for when you're stuck on the 405. The La Brea Tar Pits smell like fresh asphalt on a Read more...
Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!
October 07, 2008
Okay, there aren' t really any lions, tigers, or bears in Long Beach, but there are plenty of other critters to see, and not just squirrels and pigeons. One of my favorite spots to see the local wildlife in Long Beach is the Colorado Lagoon . The Lagoon is a hangout for pelicans, egrets, and even the occasional great blue heron, not to mention garden-variety ducks and geese. In the summer from Read more...
How to Cultivate a Green (And Very Tiny) Thumb
October 06, 2008
I like the idea of gardening. Unfortunately, I have a black thumb. I promise if I babysit your plant while you're on vacation, it will be a heap of dead leaves when you return. But while I can't teach my daughter to grow things, I do encourage her to appreciate nature in the form of other people's gardens. On our walks around our neighborhood, Bluff Heights, we notice the lush Read more...
